Busselton

Tuesday morning we were up early and packed, and picked up a rental car. From there we drove south, to spend some time in the southwest of Australia.

Our first stop was the Busselton Jetty: a jetty that stretches almost two kilometers into the Indian Ocean. A long jetty is kind of interesting, but the real draw was the underwater observatory at the end of the jetty. We were excited to see that.

Only when we arrived at 11 am, we found out that the next available tour wasn't until 2 pm. Three hours? Ok. I guess we'll wait.

So we spent some time looking at Busselton. The beach was covered in stinky sea grass. Jonathan wanted to walk out on it in spite of the smell. So we all did....

Ok here we are.

And then we walked back. And ate lunch. And walked around the town a bit. And bought some ice cream in a grocery store. And walked to the jetty again. And anyway, we killed off three hours doing not very much in Busselton, before it was finally our turn to take the train ride out to the end of the jetty for our tour.

The train had its own little jingle that they played twice. I sang along.

End of the train line. Get off here.

In the picture below, we are guessing that UWO stands for Under Water Observatory. But it could be Unidentified Walking Object.

Finally inside the observatory, it looked like this:

Very green.

In fact, we were told that visibility in the winter, including July, was much much lower than in the summer. We couldn't see much further out than a foot because of all the green detritus in the water. Even so, we were pretty impressed by the number of fish.

Here is a picture of Jonathan communing with the fish.

He even saw a jellyfish float by the window. The rest of us did not.

Back outside, we walked to the very very end of the very very long jetty (it was about 100 feet from the observatory).

And then took the train back.

And that was it. It was late enough in the day that we decided just to drive to our hotel, and check in, and cook dinner, and be boring people.

So that was Tuesday.
